Hiran Women Action on Advocacy for Peace & Human Rights:

Introduction

HIWA is a local Somali humanitarian organization that has been working in Somalia particularly in Hiran region since it's foundation in 1997. After the phase out of the international community in 1995 a group of women in Hiran Region with wide range knowledge of the Somali Culture founded the organization in order to advocate for peace, Human Rights and Development programs.
HIWA Maintains its Headquarter office in Beletweyne the capital of Hiran Region but has branch office in Mogadishu the Capital City of Somalia.

HIWA 's Board of Trustee consists of seven (7) members (individuals).
The board are the decision making arm of the organization charged with networking, recruitment, and other important roles. The Board sits once every month and in the case of extraordinary meeting, it may be called by 2/3 of BOT or the Chairperson.

HIWA has an operating team of 15 individuals. They are charged with the actual implementation of projects as well as the maintenance of the secretarial activities.


Aims of HIWA Foundation:

Assist Women groups needs in terms of : -

1. Water and Sanitation.
2. Income Generation
3. Rehabilitation of infrastructures.
4. Peace Promotion.
5. Community mobilization an the important role of women in to day life.
6. Prevention of women violence.
7. Developments Concerns .
8. Political participation /decision-making.
9. Assists Education for young girls at Hiran Region.

2. Coordination between Women groups and donors .
3. Provision of training programs to the women on education ,Nutrition marketing and other income generating skills.
4. Mobilize grass roots Women in order to voidance their awareness on peace promotion and their potential as individuals and as groups .
5. Collect information on domestic violence cased by the Somali Civil War.
6. Assist the war affected children and women of all categories.
7. Record all cases of child abuses in Hiran Region and create an environment where the child rights are respected through awareness.
8. More Awareness of AIDS/HIV existence to the people of Hiran Region and how to prevent it.
9. Data collection on the weapons flowing into the region from the bordering countries.


Organizational Objectives.

The objectives of HIWA Organization are the following: -

1) Recording and documenting Human rights in Somalia in general and in Hiran Region in particularly.
2) Promoting public awareness on the protection of Human rights through workshops and training
3) Reducing illiteracy among Somali people especially the poor and orphaned children in Hiran Region.
4) Preaching gender gap in education promoting gender balance in education.
5) Raising the living standard of vulnerable Women groups through education, training and provision of income generation activities.
6) Providing free medical service to poor women and those wounded in inter-clan fighting.
7) Working on prevention against epidemic disease such as HIV/AIDS so on.
8) Working on environment conservation issues through public awareness and training.
9) Mobilize grass roots women in order to enhance their awareness on peace advocacy, promotion and their potentials as individuals and as groups.
10) Promoting peace building and supporting reconciliation efforts through peace marches demonstrations, conferences etc.
11) Coordinating Women groups and Donors.


Vission.

To Raise the living standard of the vulnerable women Groups, children and young people by mobilizing their conscious awareness on ownership feeling and transforming it into self reliance.


Mission.

To alleviate the suffering of vulnerable Women groups, war affected children and young people in Hiran region through provision of education opportunities, free medical service as well as offering technical assistance and training support on development maintenance.

8) Strengthen preventive programs that promote women's health.
9) Undertake gender sensitive initiatives that address sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, and sexual and reproductive health issues.
10) Take integrated measures to prevent and eliminate violence
against women.
11) Increases the participation of women in conflict resolution at a decision-making levels and protects women living in institutions of the armed and other conflicts.
12) Promote women's contribution to fostering a culture of peace
13) Provide protection, assistance and training to refugee women and internally displaced women.
14) Promote women's economic rights and independence, including access to employment; appropriate working conditions and control over economic resources.
15) Facilitate women's equal access to resources, employment markets
and trade.
16) Strengthen women's economic capacity and commercial networks.
17) Eliminate occupational segregation and all forms of employment discrimination.
18) Promote harmonization of work and family responsibilities for women and men.
19) Take measures to ensure women's equal access to and full participation in power structures and decision-making and leadership.
20) Increase women's capacity to participate in decision and leadership.
21) Promote and protect the human rights of women, through the full implementation of all human rights instruments, especially the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women.
22) Ensure equality and non-discrimination under the law and in practice.

24) Increase the participation and access of women to expression and decision-making in all through the media and new technologies of communication.
25) Promote a balanced and non-stereo typed portrayed of women in the media.

29) Promote and protect the rights of the girl child and increase awareness of her needs and potential

32) Eliminate the economic exploitation of child labor and protect young girls at work.
33) Eradicate violence against the girl child

35) Strengthen the role of the family in improving the status of the girl child.
